Holiday Tips from the Trainer

Keep your dog out of trouble this holiday season!

The holidays can be a stressful time! The last thing any of us need is our dog swiping our latest cooking creation or shredding our careful gift wrapping job. Keep your dog on the nice list by thinking ahead and following these tips!

Tip #1: Utilize Management!

If you aren’t sure you can trust your dog around your food, presents or decorations, then limit their access to these things when they aren’t being supervised. Use baby gates, exercise pens, crating, or just simply closing the door to that room to keep your dog and your things safe. It’s up to you to prevent your dog from finding trouble!

Tip #2: Keep them busy!

Prepare enrichment activities like food toys (frozen stuffed Kong toys, snuffle mats, puzzles, etc.) and chews (bully sticks, pig ears, etc) ahead of time to have them on hand when you can’t keep an eye on your dog- like during a holiday meal. Not only will this keep them busy, but it will help relax them and tire them out!

Tip #3: Give them a Designated “Place”

Teach your dog to lie down and stay on their bed, mat or kennel so that they have a designated place to settle while you’re cooking, eating a holiday meal or opening presents. Haven’t taught this to your dog yet? We can help! Contact us about signing up for training today!
